Ask Alec: Does Every Oriental Rug Really Need a Bath?

Today’s Question:
Does every Oriental rug really need to be washed?
One of the most common questions I’ve been asked over the years is whether every Oriental rug should be professionally washed.
The answer surprises many people.
No. Not every Oriental rug needs a bath.
After more than 56 years of cleaning fine rugs, I’ve learned that every rug should be evaluated individually. While some rugs absolutely benefit from a full immersion wash, others can be safely and effectively cleaned using different methods. In some cases, washing may not be the best choice at all.
That’s why I never believed in treating every rug the same.
Every Rug Has Its Own Story
Before recommending any cleaning method, I look at several factors:
- The type of fibers used in the rug.
- The dyes and whether they are colorfast.
- The rug’s age and condition.
- The construction and foundation.
- Previous cleanings or repairs.
- The amount and type of soiling.
- Any stains, odors, or damage.
Two rugs may look nearly identical, yet require completely different cleaning methods.
Washing Isn’t Always the Right Answer
Many people assume that a full wash is the “gold standard” for every Oriental rug. While washing is often the best choice, there are situations where another method may better protect the rug.
For example, some older rugs have weakened foundations or unstable dyes. Others have delicate fibers or previous repairs that deserve extra care. In those situations, choosing the safest cleaning method is far more important than automatically choosing the most aggressive one.
Professional rug cleaning isn’t about following one procedure for every rug. It’s about understanding the rug and selecting the method that gives the best result while protecting its long-term condition.
Experience Makes the Difference
One lesson I’ve learned over the years is that experience doesn’t just teach you how to clean a rug.
It teaches you when not to.
There have been many times when the best advice I could give a customer was to avoid unnecessary procedures and choose the approach that was safest for their particular rug. My responsibility has always been to protect the rug first—not simply perform the most extensive cleaning possible.
The Goal Is to Preserve Your Rug
Many Oriental rugs are more than floor coverings. They may be family heirlooms, valuable investments, or pieces filled with memories.
Every cleaning decision should focus on preserving the rug’s beauty, structure, and longevity—not simply making it look cleaner today.
That’s why I believe every Oriental rug deserves an individual evaluation before deciding on the best cleaning method.
My Advice
If someone tells you that every Oriental rug should always be cleaned exactly the same way, be cautious.
The best cleaning professionals don’t begin with a predetermined method.
They begin by carefully examining the rug.
Only then can they recommend the cleaning process that’s truly best for that specific rug.
That’s the approach I’ve followed since opening my business in 1970, and it’s one I still believe serves homeowners best today.
