Ask Alec: How Often Should Carpets Be Professionally Cleaned?

One of the questions homeowners ask me most often is:

“How often should I have my carpet professionally cleaned?”

The answer depends on several factors, including the amount of foot traffic, whether you have children or pets, and the type of carpet in your home.

One thing I can tell you after 56 years of professionally cleaning carpets is this:

The best time to clean your carpet is before it looks dirty—not after.

Many people wait until their carpet has obvious traffic lanes or stains before calling a professional. By then, dirt and grit have often been grinding against the carpet fibers for months, causing unnecessary wear.

Why Carpet Can Look Clean When It Isn’t

One of the biggest misconceptions about carpet is that if it looks clean, it must be clean.

In reality, much of the damaging soil settles deep into the carpet where it isn’t always visible.

Every time someone walks across the carpet, those tiny particles act like fine sandpaper against the fibers.

Professional cleaning removes this hidden soil before it permanently damages your carpet.

General Cleaning Guidelines

Although every home is different, these are good general recommendations:

  • Every 6–12 months for homes with children, pets, or heavy foot traffic.
  • Every 12–18 months for the average household.
  • More frequently if someone in the home suffers from allergies or respiratory concerns, or if the carpet experiences unusually heavy use.

Regular Vacuuming Makes a Difference

Professional cleaning works best when it’s combined with regular vacuuming.

Vacuuming removes much of the dry soil before it becomes deeply embedded in the carpet.

The combination of routine vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning provides the best protection for your investment.

Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late

I’ve seen many carpets that could have lasted years longer if they had been cleaned before they became heavily soiled.

Once the carpet fibers become permanently worn or damaged, no cleaning process can restore them.

Preventive maintenance is always less expensive than replacing carpet years before its time.

Ask Alec’s Advice

Think of professional carpet cleaning the same way you think about changing the oil in your car.

You don’t wait for the engine to fail before performing maintenance.

Your carpet deserves the same approach.

Cleaning it before it looks dirty helps preserve its appearance, extends its life, and protects one of the largest investments in your home.
