How Do You Know If You’re Hiring the Right Carpet Cleaner?
This is one of the most important questions a homeowner can ask.
Over the past 56 years, I’ve met many people who told me they wished they had known more before hiring a carpet cleaning company. Unfortunately, by the time they called me, they had already experienced poor workmanship, damaged furnishings, or disappointing results.

So how do you know if you’re hiring the right carpet cleaner?
For me, it has never been about who has the biggest truck, the newest equipment, or the lowest price. Those things don’t tell you how your home will be treated.
What matters most is the person doing the work.
Long before we begin cleaning anything, I teach our technicians to stop and observe. Look carefully at the carpet or upholstery. Think about the type of fiber or fabric, its age, its condition, and any areas that may need special attention. Never rush into cleaning just because the equipment is ready.
Then I ask them one simple question.
“If this belonged to you—or to your mother—how would you treat it?”
That one question changes everything.
I remember arriving at a customer’s home one morning and spending several minutes simply looking at the carpet before unloading a single piece of equipment. The homeowner finally smiled and asked, “Aren’t you going to start cleaning?”
I replied, “I already have.”
I explained that I was studying the carpet fibers, the traffic patterns, previous cleaning attempts, stains, and the overall condition of the carpet. Before I decide how to clean something, I want to understand exactly what I’m working with.
Those few minutes often make the difference between a good cleaning and an exceptional one.
Anyone can clean a carpet. Experience is knowing how to clean that carpet.
Sometimes the best decision isn’t to use a stronger cleaning solution or a more aggressive cleaning method. Sometimes it’s taking a little more time, using a gentler approach, or even recommending that a particular stain be left alone rather than risking permanent damage.
Experience also means knowing when not to clean something a certain way.

I’ve spent my career studying fibers, dyes, cleaning chemistry, and how different materials react. Every carpet, upholstery fabric, and Oriental rug is different. There is no single cleaning method that’s right for every situation.

The right carpet cleaner should be willing to explain what they’re doing and why. They should answer your questions honestly, never pressure you into services you don’t need, and treat your home with the same care they would expect in their own.

After more than five decades, I’ve learned that great carpet cleaning isn’t just about removing soil. It’s about slowing down, paying attention to the details, and treating every customer’s home with the same care and respect you would give your own family’s home.
That’s the philosophy I’ve followed since starting Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning in 1970, and it’s one that has never changed.
