Ask Alec: Can Wall-to-Wall Carpet Really Last 40 Years?

# Ask Alec: Can Carpet Really Last 40 Years?

The answer surprised even some of my customers. Here’s the true story of the carpet I installed in my own family room in 1986—and why it’s still in service today.

Original wall-to-wall carpet installed in 1986 in the family room of Alec Houle's Abington, Massachusetts home, still in service nearly 40 years later.
Our family room in the home my wife and I built in 1986. This was the busiest room in our house, with two active children, a dog, and daily family use. Nearly 40 years later, the original wall-to-wall carpet remains in service—a testament to choosing the right carpet and maintaining it properly.

One of the questions I’ve been asked countless times over the past 56 years is:

**”Alec, how long should wall-to-wall carpet last?”**

Many people assume carpet has a life expectancy of 10 to 15 years.

My answer has always been…

**It depends.**

Not all carpets are created equal, and not all carpets are maintained the same way.

Let me share a personal story.

## Our Family Room

In 1986, my wife and I built our home in Abington, Massachusetts. The main living area was over 4,000 square feet, and just off the kitchen—down four steps—was our family room.

That room quickly became the heart of our home.

It was where we watched television almost every evening, celebrated birthdays and holidays, entertained family and friends, and simply relaxed together after a busy day.

Like many families, we also had two active children and a dog.

Without question, it was the busiest room in our home.

When it came time to choose the carpet, I wasn’t thinking about writing an article someday. I simply selected the carpet that I believed was best suited for a room that would receive heavy, everyday use.

Having already spent many years in the carpet cleaning industry, I knew that choosing the right carpet was just as important as maintaining it properly.

## My Maintenance Plan

Because this room received so much daily use, I professionally cleaned the carpet using the hot water extraction method approximately every six months.

Some people might think that sounds excessive.

I don’t.

The goal wasn’t simply to make the carpet look clean.

The goal was to remove the abrasive soil before it could permanently damage the carpet fibers.

Between professional cleanings, we vacuumed regularly because vacuuming removes much of the dry soil that acts like tiny pieces of sandpaper every time someone walks across the carpet.

## Nearly Forty Years Later

About ten years ago, we sold the house.

The family who purchased it has two young children, and from everything I understand, they use that family room much the same way we did.

Here’s the remarkable part…

**The original carpet is still there.**

Today, that carpet is approximately **40 years old.**

Does it look exactly as it did the day it was installed?

Of course not.

No carpet will.

But it has worn evenly, continues to look attractive, and has provided nearly four decades of service in one of the busiest rooms in the house.

## So, What’s the Secret?

Over the years, I’ve heard many people say they were afraid to have their carpet professionally cleaned because they thought cleaning would wear it out.

The truth is just the opposite.

**It’s the dirt that wears out carpet—not proper cleaning.**

Tiny particles of sand, grit, and dry soil work their way deep into the carpet. Every step grinds those particles against the fibers like fine sandpaper. Over time, that abrasion causes permanent wear.

Regular vacuuming removes much of the loose soil, while professional hot water extraction removes the deeply embedded soil that ordinary vacuuming leaves behind.

Combined with choosing the right carpet for the room, proper maintenance can dramatically extend the life of your investment.

## My Advice

After more than 56 years in the carpet cleaning industry, I’ve seen beautiful carpets wear out in less than ten years because they were the wrong carpet for the room or weren’t properly maintained.

I’ve also seen carpets—like the one in my own family room—continue to perform beautifully after nearly 40 years.

That isn’t luck.

It’s the result of choosing the right carpet, maintaining it properly, and treating it as an investment rather than something disposable.

If there’s one lesson I’d like homeowners to remember, it’s this:

**The life of your carpet isn’t determined the day it’s installed. It’s determined by how well you care for it over the years.**

## Have a Question for Ask Alec?

After more than 56 years in the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry, I’ve learned that homeowners often have the same questions about carpet, upholstery, area rugs, and Oriental rugs.

If there’s a topic you’d like me to cover in a future **Ask Alec** article, I’d love to hear from you.
