If there’s one thing I’ve learned after more than 56 years in the carpet and upholstery cleaning industry, it’s that doing the right thing is always more important than making the sale.
My name is Alec Houle, owner of Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC. Since 1970, I’ve had the privilege of helping homeowners throughout Greater Boston and Cape Cod care for their carpets, upholstery, Oriental rugs, and fine area rugs.
During those years, I’ve answered thousands of questions. Some were simple. Others required experience, careful investigation, and sometimes the willingness to tell a homeowner something they weren’t expecting to hear.
I created Ask Alec to share the same honest, practical advice I’ve been giving my customers for more than five decades. These articles aren’t written to persuade you to buy a service. They’re written to help you understand how to care for your home’s furnishings, avoid costly mistakes, and make informed decisions.
One lesson I’ve learned over the years is that the obvious answer isn’t always the right one. I’ve seen carpets that looked beyond saving clean up beautifully. I’ve seen rugs that appeared clean but needed immediate attention. And there have been many times when the best advice I could give was, “Don’t spend your money. You don’t need my services yet.”
Experience doesn’t just teach you how to clean something. It teaches you when not to.
That philosophy has guided my business since the day I opened my doors. My responsibility has always been to use my knowledge and experience to help my clients make the best decision for their home. Sometimes that means recommending professional cleaning. Other times it means suggesting a different solution—or simply telling someone they don’t need my services.
Over the years, I’ve been honored to have my knowledge recognized by respected publications, including House & Garden and Boston Magazine. While those recognitions were meaningful, the greatest compliment I’ve ever received has been the trust that generations of homeowners have placed in me.
