Ask Alec: Is Vacuuming Just About Appearance?
One of the questions I’ve heard over the years is whether regular vacuuming is really that important. Many homeowners think vacuuming is simply about keeping their carpet looking nice. In reality, it serves a much bigger purpose.
Years ago, I was taught to think of carpet as a “sink.” Not the kind in your kitchen, but a place where dust, pollen, pet dander, dry soil, and other airborne particles settle and remain until they’re removed through regular vacuuming and periodic professional cleaning.
We’ve all experienced sitting in a room when the sunlight streams through a window just right. Suddenly, you can see countless tiny particles floating in the air—particles we normally don’t notice but breathe every day. Eventually, those particles settle onto the surfaces in our homes.
In my experience, a properly maintained carpet can trap many of those particles within the carpet pile rather than allowing them to remain airborne. That’s one reason why regular vacuuming is so important. It’s not just about making the carpet look clean—it’s about removing the dust, grit, pollen, and other debris that accumulates over time.
Of course, the vacuum itself also matters. A vacuum with good filtration is far more effective at capturing fine particles than one with poor filtration that may allow some of those particles to be released back into the room. For many years, I’ve preferred a central vacuum system that exhausts outside the home because it removes those particles completely from the indoor environment.
I’m not a physician, and I’m not offering medical advice. Every home and every family is different. What I can tell you from more than 56 years in the carpet cleaning industry is that proper carpet maintenance isn’t just about appearance. Regular vacuuming and professional cleaning help remove the dry soil and other accumulated particles that collect in a carpet over time.
A clean carpet isn’t just more attractive—it can also be an important part of maintaining a cleaner home.
In a future Ask Alec article, I’ll explain one of the biggest myths in our industry—whether professional carpet cleaning actually wears out a carpet. The answer may surprise you.
