My name is Alec Houle. I began cleaning carpets and upholstery in 1962, and in 1970 I founded Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC.
For more than six decades, I’ve helped homeowners throughout Greater Boston, MetroWest, the South Shore, and Cape Cod care for their carpets, fine upholstery, Oriental rugs, and area rugs.
Over the years, I’ve learned that good cleaning isn’t simply about removing dirt.
It’s about understanding what you’re cleaning, knowing what the material can safely tolerate, and choosing the right approach for that particular carpet, rug, or piece of furniture.
One lesson has stayed with me throughout my career:
Not every carpet, sofa, or rug should be cleaned the same way — and sometimes the best advice is not to clean it at all.
Experience doesn’t just teach you how to clean something.

I provide professional carpet cleaning for homes throughout Greater Boston, MetroWest, the South Shore, and Cape Cod.
I clean wall-to-wall carpeting, wool carpets, synthetic carpeting, custom stair runners, hallways, stairs, and high-traffic family-room carpeting.
Every carpet is evaluated individually because fiber type, construction, condition, amount of soil, previous cleaning, and other factors can affect how it should be cleaned.
The carpet determines the cleaning method — not the other way around.

Professional Upholstery Cleaning
Upholstered furniture can accumulate years of body oils, dust, pollen, pet dander, food particles, and everyday soil long before it actually looks dirty.
I professionally clean sofas, sectionals, chairs, dining chairs, ottomans, upholstered headboards, and many other types of furniture.
I work with a wide range of fabrics, including cotton, linen, wool, velvet, chenille, microfiber, performance fabrics, and other specialty materials.
Not every fabric should be cleaned the same way.
I evaluate the fabric, construction, condition, and type of soiling before determining the safest and most appropriate cleaning method.

Professional Oriental & Fine Area Rug Cleaning
Some area rugs can be successfully cleaned in the home.
Others deserve something more.
In 1979, I built my office and dedicated rug-cleaning facility in Abington specifically so area rugs could be cleaned and dried properly under controlled conditions. That facility remains an important part of my business today.
I professionally clean:

At my facility, I can carefully inspect, clean, rinse, dry, and finish each rug according to its individual requirements.
A fine Oriental rug should not automatically be treated the same way as an ordinary area rug.

Outdoor Cushion Cleaning & Winter Storage
Outdoor cushions experience conditions that indoor fabrics don’t.
Sun, rain, humidity, pollen, dirt, food and beverage spills, sunscreen, bird droppings, and everyday outdoor use can leave cushions looking heavily soiled or weathered.
I clean outdoor cushions at my Abington facility, where I can control the cleaning, rinsing, drying, and final inspection.
I also offer optional climate-controlled winter storage for cleaned cushions.
After cleaning and thorough drying, cushions can be wrapped and stored until you’re ready for the next outdoor season.
I also clean outdoor umbrellas and other specialty outdoor fabrics when appropriate.

Fabric & Carpet Protection
Professional protection can help certain carpets, rugs, and upholstered fabrics resist spills and make routine maintenance easier.
But I don’t believe every textile automatically needs protection.
The fiber, condition, construction, and how the item is used should all be considered first.
I recommend protection when I believe it makes sense for the particular material — not simply because it’s another service I can sell.

The strongest cleaning solution isn’t necessarily the best cleaning solution.

Other times it means telling a customer that the item doesn’t need to be cleaned yet.

Some rugs benefit from being professionally cleaned, thoroughly rinsed, carefully dried, and inspected at a dedicated facility.
That’s why I built my Abington rug-cleaning plant in 1979.
Having our own facility allows me to provide pickup and professional in-plant cleaning for many types of fine and specialty rugs.
A rug’s fiber, construction, age, condition, dyes, and previous history all matter when deciding how it should be cleaned.
