Learn which cloths work best to absorb spills on carpets and upholstery. Expert tips on using cotton, paper towels, and cellulose materials effectively.

What Type of Cloth Should You Use to Absorb a Spill on Carpet?

Accidents happen—spilled drinks, dropped snacks, or a pet mishap. The key to minimizing damage is blotting the spill immediately. But did you know the type of cloth you use can make a big difference? Here’s what you need to know.

Avoid Colored or Printed Paper Towels

Many people instinctively reach for a paper towel, napkin, or dishcloth. If you do use a paper product, make sure it’s plain white with no dye or prints. Colored or printed towels can transfer ink into your carpet or upholstery fibers, creating a stain worse than the original spill.

Tip: Keep plain white cotton napkins or cloths handy when entertaining guests, so no one accidentally uses a colorful printed napkin on your furniture.

Why Cellulose Materials Work Best

The most effective materials for blotting spills are cellulose-based, like paper towels or cotton cloths. Why? Cellulose fibers are made of sugar molecules that naturally attract and absorb water. This allows the fibers to soak up spills quickly and efficiently.

  • Paper towels: Convenient and disposable, but have less absorption power.

  • White cotton cloths: Thicker and more absorbent than paper towels. Use a clean section frequently as you blot to avoid spreading the liquid.

How to Blot Properly

  1. Use a clean, white cotton cloth or paper towel.

  2. Blot gently, don’t rub—rubbing can push the liquid deeper into the fibers.

  3. Rotate to a fresh part of the cloth as it becomes saturated.

This is the first and most important step in handling any spill. Once you’ve removed as much liquid as possible, further treatment may be required depending on the type of stain. For guidance on specific stains like red wine, blood, or pet accidents, check out our other stain removal blogs.
