Emergency Upholstery Spot & Stain Guide | Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning LLC
Handle with Care: Upholstery is Not Carpet
When a spill happens on your furniture, the stakes are high. Upholstery fabrics—ranging from delicate silks and velvets to modern microfibers and chenilles—require specialized skills and specific pH-balanced cleaners.
CRITICAL RULE: Never use “off-the-shelf” carpet or rug spot cleaners on your furniture. These products are often too harsh and can cause permanent fiber distortion, “browning,” or color loss.
The “First Response” Protocol for Upholstery Spills
-
Remove Solids: Gently scrape away any solid material using a spoon or a dull knife. Be careful not to press the substance deeper into the weave.
-
Blot, Never Rub: Use a clean, white cotton cloth or plain white paper towels. Rubbing or scrubbing will fray the delicate upholstery fibers and can cause a permanent “fuzzy” spot that cannot be repaired.
-
Lift Moisture: Press the cloth firmly against the spill to pull the liquid out. Switch to a fresh, dry section of the cloth frequently.
-
Damp Rinse: Follow by lightly blotting the area with a slightly damp white cloth (using lukewarm water) to lift any remaining residue.
For Acidic Stains (Wine, Coffee, Tea, Fruit Juice, or Pet Accidents)
Acidic spills can act as a dye and bond quickly with upholstery fibers. After performing the initial blotting steps:
-
The Club Soda Method: Lightly mist the area with club soda using a fine-mist sprayer. Let it sit for 2–3 minutes to neutralize the acid, then blot thoroughly until dry.
-
Avoid Over-Wetting: Upholstery backings and foam cushions can hold moisture for a long time, leading to odors or “water rings.” Use the minimum amount of liquid possible.
When to Stop and Call the Professionals
If a stain persists after your initial blotting, or if you are dealing with Ink, Lipstick, Oil-Based Paint, or Blood, do not attempt to clean it yourself. These substances require professional solvents and controlled extraction.
