How to Get Rid of Carpet & Rug Dents from Furniture | Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning
If you have carpets or area rugs in your home, you’ve likely noticed dents or impressions left behind by heavy furniture. These indentations can make even the cleanest rug look worn down. Fortunately, there are proven methods to minimize or remove these unsightly marks. At Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning, we’ve been helping Boston and Cape Cod homeowners restore the look of their carpets and rugs for over 50 years.
What Causes Furniture Dents in Carpets and Rugs?
Indentations form when furniture compresses carpet fibers and, in some cases, the rug backing or padding. Several factors determine how severe and permanent these dents may be:
Weight of the furniture – Heavier pieces cause deeper impressions.
Density of the carpet pile – Less dense carpets offer less vertical support, leading to more noticeable dents.
Fiber composition – Wool, nylon, polypropylene, and blends all respond differently to pressure.
Backing material – Natural backings like cotton or jute expand and contract with humidity, while latex or synthetic backings may stretch permanently.
Padding quality – A worn or low-quality pad beneath the rug accelerates indentations.
Time and humidity – The longer furniture sits in one spot, the more difficult dents are to remove.
Why the “Ice Cube Trick” Can Be Risky
You may have heard of placing ice cubes on dents to lift carpet fibers. While this works in some cases, it comes with risks. When the ice melts, moisture can seep into the backing. If your rug has jute, this often leads to brown stains, and if the face fibers are wool, it could even cause permanent discoloration.
Step-by-Step: Removing Dents from Area Rugs
Vacuum Thoroughly
Go over the affected area multiple times in different directions to loosen fibers.Apply Heat & Moisture Safely
Dampen a white cotton or microfiber cloth with hot water.
Wring out excess so it’s damp, not dripping.
Blot the dented area to moisten fibers (avoid soaking the backing).
Lift the Pile
Gently brush fibers upward with a soft brush or your fingers to encourage them to stand again.Let Dry Completely
Allow 2–8 hours (depending on humidity). Once dry, vacuum the area again to restore the nap.Check the Rug Backing
If natural fibers are present, humidity changes will help them rebound over time.
If the backing is synthetic and stretched out, try placing cotton balls or padding under the dented areas and securing them with duct tape to the underside of the rug. This helps lift the surface when put back in place.
Dealing with Wall-to-Wall Carpeting
Wall-to-wall carpets present more challenges since you can’t simply lift them like area rugs. If the dents are severe, a professional carpet installer may need to restretch your carpet to manufacturer specifications.
For less severe dents, professional steam cleaning can help revive fibers and restore appearance.
Can All Dents Be Removed?
Not always. Severe impressions caused by heavy furniture left in place for years may not completely disappear. However, with the right cleaning and fiber restoration methods, dents can often be greatly reduced.
