How to Prevent Black Lines Along the Edges of Your Carpet

If you’ve noticed dark lines forming along your carpet edges, you’re seeing soil filtration in action. This is common in Boston homes, as well as suburban houses with garages below or oil-fired heating systems.

What Causes Black Lines on Carpet Edges?

  • Soot and fine particles are drawn into wall cavities due to negative air pressure.

  • These particles travel through the walls and exit where the wall meets the floor.

  • Your carpet acts as a filter, trapping the soot and leaving visible black lines along the edges.

The Simple Solution: Seal Airflow with Caulking

You can prevent soil filtration before it starts by:

  1. Applying a bead of caulking along the base of the wall before laying carpet.

  2. Ensuring the caulking seals any airflow from the wall cavity.

Benefits:

  • Quick and easy: takes about 15 minutes for an average-sized room.

  • Cost-effective: minimal materials required.

  • Long-lasting results: keeps carpets looking clean and fresh for years.

Interior designers, consider this small extra step—it’s a detail your clients will truly appreciate!
