If you’re looking for professional area rug cleaning in Concord, MA, you’ve come to the right place. At Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning, we’ve been cleaning fine area rugs for homeowners throughout Greater Boston since 1970.
An area rug is much more than a floor covering. Whether it’s a hand-knotted Oriental rug, a contemporary wool rug, a family heirloom, or a favorite decorative piece, every rug has its own construction, fibers, dyes, and history. Because of those differences, we believe every rug deserves an individual evaluation before cleaning begins.
Many fine area rugs are best cleaned in our dedicated rug cleaning plant in Abington, where we can perform specialized inspection, cleaning, drying, and finishing procedures that simply aren’t practical in most homes. Before recommending in-plant cleaning, we evaluate each rug individually because not every rug requires the same approach.
Every Rug Has Its Own Story
No two rugs are exactly alike.
Some are hand-knotted wool rugs that have lasted for generations. Others are machine-made rugs with synthetic fibers. Some contain cotton foundations, delicate fringe, or dyes that require special attention during cleaning.
Understanding those differences is one of the reasons homeowners have trusted Alec’s Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning for more than 55 years. Rather than using the same cleaning process for every rug, we tailor our approach to the individual rug and its specific needs.
Your Rug’s Journey Begins With a Careful Inspection
When your rug arrives at our cleaning plant, the first thing we do is assign it its own identification tag. From that point forward, every step of the cleaning process is performed with your specific rug in mind.
Before any cleaning begins, we carefully inspect the rug for worn areas, fringe damage, cuts, tears, moth damage, fiber distortion, previous repairs, and any other conditions that could affect the cleaning process.
If we discover a condition that wasn’t previously discussed, we contact you before cleaning begins. We believe our customers should understand the condition of their rug before any work is performed.
Likewise, if a rug is extremely worn or contains stains that are unlikely to improve significantly, we’ll explain our observations honestly so you can make an informed decision before we proceed.
Removing Dry Soil Before Washing
One of the most important parts of professional rug cleaning happens before any water is introduced.
Over time, area rugs collect an amazing amount of dry soil, dust, and gritty particles that work their way deep into the fibers and foundation of the rug.
Before washing, we thoroughly vacuum both the front and the back of the rug, often making multiple passes to remove as much dry soil as possible. Removing this material before washing helps us achieve a better overall cleaning while reducing the amount of soil that would otherwise turn to mud during the washing process.
Every Stain Deserves Individual Attention
Not every stain should be treated the same way.
Certain spots may require specialized cleaning agents, solvents, heat transfer techniques, or carefully selected pre-treatment procedures before the rug receives its overall cleaning.
In some situations, we even use ultraviolet (black) lights to locate older stains that may not be obvious under normal lighting. Identifying these areas allows us to give them the attention they deserve before the general cleaning process begins.

Cleaning, Drying, and Final Inspection
Once the rug has been thoroughly prepared, we clean the entire rug, including the fringe whenever appropriate.
After cleaning, additional vacuum recovery helps remove excess moisture before the rug is carefully hung in our drying area.
High-velocity air movers circulate large volumes of air across the rug while a powerful exhaust system removes humid air from the building. This controlled drying environment helps promote even drying throughout the rug.
Once the rug is completely dry, we perform another detailed inspection. If any remaining spots require additional attention, they’re addressed before the rug is vacuumed one final time.
The rug is then carefully rolled, securely tied, and prepared for delivery.
For customers requesting seasonal storage, rugs are wrapped in Tyvek®, a breathable material that helps protect the rug while still allowing it to breathe during storage.
Experience Matters
Area rug cleaning isn’t simply about making a rug look cleaner.
It’s about understanding fibers, dyes, construction techniques, and the safest methods for cleaning each individual rug.
With Alec’s background in chemistry and more than 55 years of professional textile cleaning experience, every rug is evaluated individually rather than treated with a one-size-fits-all approach.
Our goal is to return your rug looking its best while treating it with the same care and respect we would give one of our own.
Alec’s Professional Tip
Many homeowners are surprised to learn that a rug can contain a tremendous amount of dry soil long before it begins to look dirty.
Regular vacuuming helps, but over time fine particles work deep into the foundation of the rug where household vacuums simply cannot remove them completely. Periodic professional cleaning helps remove this embedded soil before it has an opportunity to contribute to unnecessary fiber wear.
Complete Home Textile Care
In addition to Area Rug Cleaning, we also provide Carpet Cleaning and Upholstery Cleaning throughout Concord. Many homeowners choose to have several textile surfaces professionally cleaned at the same time, helping keep their entire home looking its best.
