One thing I’ve learned after more than 60 years of cleaning carpets is that the biggest problem is often not the original spill — it’s what happens after the spill.
A homeowner spills something on the carpet, panics, grabs the nearest cleaning product, and starts scrubbing. Unfortunately, rubbing, using the wrong chemical, or applying too much cleaning solution can sometimes make the problem worse.

What Should You Do When Something Spills on Your Carpet?
The first rule is simple:
Don’t panic — but don’t ignore it either.
The sooner you deal with a spill, the better your chances may be of removing it before it has time to penetrate deeper into the carpet or affect the dye.
Here is what I generally recommend:
1. Remove as Much of the Spill as Possible
If there is solid material on the carpet, carefully lift it away using a spoon or another dull object.
Avoid using anything sharp that could snag or damage the carpet fibers.
2. Blot — Don’t Rub
Use a clean, white absorbent cloth or plain white paper towels.
Press gently to absorb as much of the spill as possible.
Do not scrub or rub the carpet.
Rubbing can push the spill deeper into the fibers and may damage the tips of the carpet yarn.
3. Keep Using a Clean Area of the Towel
As the towel absorbs the spill, move to a clean, dry section.
Continue blotting until you are no longer picking up significant moisture or color.
4. Don’t Flood the Carpet
One of the biggest mistakes I see is using too much water or cleaning solution.
Overwetting can push contamination deeper into the carpet and backing, make drying more difficult, and sometimes contribute to problems such as wick-back.
When in doubt, use less moisture rather than more.
The Biggest Mistakes I See Homeowners Make
After decades of cleaning carpets, I’ve seen many spots that probably would have been much easier to remove if they had simply been left alone after the initial blotting.
The most common mistakes include:
- Scrubbing aggressively
- Using too much cleaning solution
- Mixing different household chemicals
- Applying products without knowing how they may affect the carpet
- Overwetting the area
- Continuing to treat the spot again and again after it stops improving
- Using colored towels that may transfer dye to the carpet
Sometimes the best thing you can do is blot up the spill, avoid experimenting with multiple products, and ask for professional advice.
Be Especially Careful With These Types of Spills
Some substances can create much bigger problems if the wrong cleaning product is used.
I recommend stopping and getting advice before attempting aggressive treatment on spills involving:
- Ink
- Nail polish
- Paint
- Oil-based products
- Permanent markers
- Strong dyes
- Unknown chemicals
- Bleach or other oxidizing products
These types of problems may require specialized cleaning agents or procedures.
When Should You Call a Professional?
If you’ve made a reasonable attempt to blot up a fresh spill and the spot is not improving, I would recommend stopping before you make the problem worse.
Professional treatment may be especially worthwhile when dealing with:
- Red wine
- Coffee and tea
- Pet accidents
- Grease and oil
- Ink
- Cosmetics
- Food dyes
- Old or recurring stains
- Dark spots that return after drying
- Large spills
- Unknown substances
Some stains can be removed completely. Others may have permanently affected the carpet fibers or dye.
I’ll always try to give you an honest opinion about what I believe can reasonably be accomplished.
Why Some Spots Keep Coming Back
One of the most frustrating things homeowners experience is a spot that appears to be gone — only to come back after the carpet dries.
This is often called wick-back.
A spill may penetrate deep into the carpet backing or lower portions of the fibers. During drying, moisture can move upward and bring some of that remaining contamination back toward the surface.
Repeatedly scrubbing the surface may not solve the problem.
In some cases, the carpet needs more thorough extraction to remove contamination from deeper in the carpet.
Spot Cleaning Isn’t Always Enough
Sometimes a visible spot is only part of the problem.
A spill can leave behind residue that attracts additional soil. Over time, the area may become darker again or feel different from the surrounding carpet.
In those situations, professional cleaning of the affected area — or sometimes the surrounding carpet — may produce a better result than repeatedly treating one small spot.
I can evaluate the situation and recommend the approach that makes the most sense.

After more than 60 years in the carpet and upholstery cleaning business, I’ve learned that there is no single product or technique that works on every stain.
The type of substance matters. The type of carpet matters. The length of time the spill has been there matters.
So does what has already been applied to the carpet.
That’s why I prefer to understand the history of the problem before recommending a cleaning method. If you know what caused the spot and what products have already been used, that information can be very helpful.
